Vocabulary 1&2: Egyptian Vocab

 

 

  • Amarna Style: A revoutionized style of Egyptian art that was created by Amenhotep IV in the 18th dynasty. He altered the artistic and religious life of ancient Egypt.

  • Engaged ColumnA column that is attached to a wall.

  • Hierarchy of ScaleA manipulation of size and space in a picture to emphasize importance of a specific object.

  • HieroglyphicsIncomprehensible symbols that were used as a method of writing in Egypt.

  • Hypostyle: A building that has columns that supports the roof.

  • In situThe original place of an object.

  • Column: An upright pillar, usually made of concrete, to support a roof, archway or other structure.

  • KaA spirit of a person after death that is believed to rest in the Ka statue.

  • Mastaba: An anciet Egyptian tomb. It has a rectangular shape with sloping sides and has a flat roof. Usually has a height of 17-20 feet. Also consists of an unferground burial chamber with rooms above it in which to store offerings.

  • Necropolis: A especially large cemetery that belongs to an ancient city.

  • Papyrus: A material that is made from the pithy stem of a water plant in ancient Egypt. It is ofren used in sheets throughout the ancient Mediterranean world for writing or painting on and aso for making rope, sandals, and boats.

  • PharaohA ruler in ancient Egypt.

  • Pylon: An upright structure that is used to support and navigational guidance.

  • Reserve: A place that is set aside for special use.

  • Sarcophagus: A stone coffin that is typically adorned with a sculpture or inscription. It is usually associated with the ancient civilizations of Egypt, Rome, and Greece.
